Vocal Characters

Vocal Characters explores what a voice looks like. Seven recordings of my own voice, melodies, rhythms and harmonies, were each translated into an intuitively painted shape, then enlarged into three-dimensional forms in colored acrylic. Assembled into a slowly turning totem, the shapes overlap in movement, creating new colors the way voices blend in harmony.

The project is also a method: listen, respond, translate, layer. An accompanying zine guides anyone through the steps, inviting them to turn their own voice into form.
